# What is Crypto?

“Crypto” used to be short for “cryptography”, but it is more relevant today as a short form for “cryptocurrencies” These include Bitcoin, Solana, Ethereum, etc. Cryptocurrencies are digital currencies that have a decentralized, distributed ledger. They may or may not have smart contract capabilities.
