# What is a Token?

A token is can be thought of as a separate currency which does not have a native blockchain of it’s own, but rather it’s been created and circulated on top of another blockchain. Tokens can be cross-chain, like USDC. They can have utility, like SRM. They can be meme tokens, like SAMO.
